We have exciting news!

Friends of Cochamó has won the grant we’ve applied for with @eocaconservation!! We are incredibly grateful, and excited to get this important project off the ground. Together, with the local community, @source_int will repair 12km of the trail. This project will provide compensation to local community members for their trail work and expertise, and will bolster the efforts of local NGOs to secure Nature Sanctuary Status for one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

THANK YOU, infinitely, to each of you who shared our posts, voted, and supported this journey. We absolutely could not have done this without you. We are deeply grateful and inspired by this amazing, change-making community.

And of course, our biggest thanks to @eocaconservation for this amazing opportunity. We are so excited to get started.

The Cochamó River is born in the Andes mountains

The Cochamó River is born in the Andes mountains and travels all the way to the sea without passing through or around a single dam. In its wake, it gives life to the flora, fauna, and people of Cochamó.

About 18,000 visitors enter the Cochamó river valley annually. Our project, in collaboration with @source_int aims to mitigate the impact by those visitors to the main access trail, which runs alongside the river. By building a durable and sustainable trail, we can prevent further erosion and help stop the impact of foot and horse traffic on the river itself.

But the threats to the Rio Cochamó extend beyond tourism. In 2009 there was a proposal to install a hydroelectric dam on the Cochamó River, but thanks to the work of the community, the project was stopped and the Cochamó river basin was declared a reserve.

It is our intention to continue working collaboratively with our sister organizations like @puelopatagonia and @org.vallecochamo to take care of the water that embraces us and gives life.

That is why today, the day AFTER world water day (sorry we’re late!), we ask you to vote for our project to help protect one of the most beautiful rivers in the world, the Río Cochamó!

¡Estamos muy contentos de mostrar algunos de los avances que hemos logrado en el trabajo del sendero que fue financiado por la subvención @atconservationfund que recibimos a principios de este año!

Como dice el Adventure Travel Conservation Fund, "este proyecto y la subvención son parte de una iniciativa más amplia para financiar a las comunidades que se ven afectadas por la desaceleración del turismo debido a Covid, pero que están priorizando la conservación para reconstruir mejor para cuando regrese el turismo".

¡Estamos muy orgullosos de ser parte de este esfuerzo! ¡Gracias ATCF, y muchas gracias también a todos los Cochamoninos locales que ayudaron con el proyecto!

We are very pleased to show some of the progress we've made on the trail work that was funded by the @atconservationfund grant we recieved earlier this year!

As the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund says, "this project and grant funding is part of a larger initiative to fund communities who are impacted by the downturn in tourism due to Covid, but who are prioritizing conservation to better rebuild for when tourism returns."

We're so proud to be a part of this effort! Thanks ATCF, and big thanks, too, to all the local Cochamoninos helping out with the project!

Huge announcement: Friends of Cochamó has been awarded its first ever Grant!

We were awarded $10,000 USD to be used to pay local horse packers (arrieros) for trail work on the trail into Cochamó!

This is great news not just for the much needed trail work, but more importantly, because many of the arrieros have been hit hard by COVID. The majority of this money will help pay wages for invaluable community members who are out of, or getting very limited work.

We couldn’t be more thrilled, and more appreciative of @atconservationfund for selecting our project for the Grant!

If you know Cochamó, you know how beautiful it is. Its landscape is as magnificent as any National Park in the world. And yet, it’s not a National Park. It is a ZOIT—a Zone of Touristic Interest. At least… it WAS.

Now, SERNATUR (Chile’s National Tourism Service) has moved not to renew Cochamó’s ZOIT designation… in spite of a petition that many of you signed (there were almost 35,000 signatories) back in 2019.

So… we’ve got a new petition. Don’t keep scrolling through your feed. Go to the link in our bio, and take two seconds to sign it. Your voice counts!

Si conoces Cochamó, sabes lo hermoso que es. Su paisaje es tan magnífico como cualquier Parque Nacional del mundo. Pero, sin embargo, no es un Parque Nacional. Es un ZOIT, una Zona de Interés Turístico. Al menos ... lo fue.

After 8 years of work and a lot of community effort the Cochamó and Puelo River's ZOIT designation has still has not been updated. The areas meet every regulation requirement but negligence and lack of political will on the part of the authorities has not allowed these Chilean communities to move forward in protecting the incredible natural and distinct cultural resources in this little corner of the world.

Un aviso importante para todos que van a visitar a Cochamó.

El acceso a ríos, cascadas, toboganes o sitios de escalada, es siempre gratuito dentro del Valle Cochamó

Si un particular, propietario, camping o cualquier persona intenta cobrarte por acceder a un río, una cascada, un lago, un sitio de escalada u otro lugar de interés, no pagues. Los únicos lugares en los que pueden exigirte el pago son campings y refugios.
El acceso a los toboganes de La Junta, Pared Seca, glaciar de la Paloma, la laguna de Trinidad, Anfiteatro, cumbre de Arco Iris y senderos establecidos es gratis según lo establecido por la ley chilena. Tal derecho está amparado en el artículo 13 del Decreto Ley N° 1.939, de 1977. Ver Acceso Playas Ríos y Lagos de la Biblioteca del Congreso en https://www.bcn.cl/leyfacil/recurso/acceso-a-playas,-rios-y-lagos.
La ONG Organización Valle Cochamó trabaja arduamente para que el Valle Cochamó se consolide como un área protegida colaborativa y se financia gracias a donaciones voluntarias. El Centro de Visitantes al comienzo del sendero es administrado por esta organización.

El acceso a los Toboganes es libre y gratuito. Bajo ningún caso debes pagar.

Si alguien intenta cobrarte:
1.) No pagues.
2.) Si es posible haz el registro con un video.
3.) Constata si entregan boletas timbradas por SII.
4.) Solicita su nombre y nombre del dueño.
5.) Haz un comentario en Google Reviews, TripAdvisor y Facebook de la entidad haciendo el cobro.
6.) Realiza la denuncia en Bienes Nacionales: http://www.bienesnacionales.cl/?page_id=35867

Esto aportará a mantener los accesos libres a los ríos, cascadas, lagos, glaciares y senderos del valle.

Los accesos libres no dan derecho a acampar en playas, borde de ríos ni en propiedades privadas no habilitadas como camping. Tampoco se pueden realizar fogatas fuera de los fogones habilitados de los camping. Por favor respetar las normas del valle, mantenerse en los senderos habilitados y juntos cuidemos el medio ambiente minimizando nuestro impacto.

An important reminder for anyone visiting Cohamó:

ACCESS TO RIVERS, WATERFALLS, LAKES, AND CLIMBING WALLS IS FREE IN VALLE COCHAMÓ.

That includes La Junta’s Toboganes, Pared Seca, Paloma’s glacier trail, Trinidad’s laguna, El Anfiteatro, Arco Iris Peak, and other established hiking trails, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and climbing walls.

Finally, please also note that free access does NOT give you the right to CAMP on beaches, next to rivers and lakes, or on private property without permission. Furthermore, it is prohibited to make fires outside of the areas designated for camping.
Please respect the guidelines of the valley, use established trails and help minimize our impact on the environment.

Great news! Friends of Cochamó is now officially a 501(c)(3) tax deductible charity organization! We got our letter of confirmation from the IRS on Saturday. This means that ANYONE who donates money to Friends of Cochamó can deduct that donation from their taxes!

Big thanks to @patagonia for helping us find legal counsel to assist with the filing! ... ¡Una gran noticia! ¡Friends of Cochamó ahora somos oficialmente una organización benéfica deducible de impuestos 501(c)(3)! Recibimos nuestra carta de confirmación del IRS el sábado. ¡Esto significa que CUALQUIERA que dona dinero a Friends of Cochamó puede deducir esa donación de sus impuestos! ¡Muchas gracias a @patagonia por ayudarnos a encontrar un asesor legal para ayudar con la presentación!

Pero a diferencia de Yosemite, Cochamó no es un parque nacional.

Lo único que actualmente protege a Cochamó es su designación como Zona de Interés Turístico (ZOIT). Ahora dicha designación está en peligro.

El empresario chileno Roberto Hagemann ha solicitado remover el 30% de las tierras actualmente protegidas bajo la ZOIT. La mitad del Valle de Cochamó se encuentra en esa tierra, incluyendo los valles de Trinidad, Anfiteatro, la Bestia y el Cerro Torrecillas.

Pero no es demasiado tarde para actuar. Puedes ayudar.

They call Cochamó the Yosemite of South America.

But unlike Yosemite, Cochamó is not a National Park.

The only thing currently protecting Cochamó is its status as a Zona de Interés Turístico (ZOIT). Now that status is under attack.
The Chilean businessman Roberto Hagemann has petitioned to remove 30% of the land currently protected under the ZOIT. A full half of Cochamó Valley lies in that land, including Trinidad, El Anfiteatro, The Monster, and Cerro Torrecillas.

But it's not too late to act. You can help.

Great news for the Route of Parks of Patagonia! Rare Andean Deer Found in Chile’s Northern Patagonia.

Thanks to an alliance between the non-profit Puelo Patagonia, Tompkins Conservation and the National Geographic Society, researchers have made the first scientific discovery of endangered huemuls (south Andean deer) in the Puelo Valley, a remote area of Chile’s Lakes District. This groundbreaking finding makes evident the need for further monitoring and protection of the species.
